How to Manage a Last-Minute Move

July 14, 2025 by

No matter how much we plan, life always comes up with surprises. If you end up facing a last-minute move, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. While it would be helpful to have ample lead time, it is possible to organize a successful move in a short period. Here’s a look at key actions to help make a last-minute move smooth and efficient.

Declutter to Minimize What You Pack

Decluttering before you begin packing can save you significant hassle. Look at how much time you have before moving day and set aside a block to get rid of things you no longer need or want. Whether you devote one hour, one afternoon, or one day to decluttering, getting rid of unnecessary items will save time when it comes to packing and transporting your belongings.

As you cull items, try to remain focused on your end goal without getting distracted by memories or other tasks. Remember that you only have a finite amount of time to complete this step of the moving process, and make the best use of it you can.

Contact a Junk Hauler

Moving can be messy. As you discard items both large and small, figuring out what to do with them can become a whole job on its own.

The good news is, you can call a local junk removal company to help get rid of everything from old papers to unwanted furniture. A professional junk hauling company will be able to handle your removal needs in one fell swoop, so you don’t have to worry about the labor or the logistics of major trash disposal.

Pack Smarter, Not Harder

When it’s time to start packing, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. You should also consider setting up a packing station in a dedicated space. Stock it with all of the materials you will need, such as:

  • Boxes
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Box cutters
  • Labels
  • Markers
  • Cushioning material
  • Resealable plastic bags for small items

It can be tempting to take your packing materials with you as you box up different rooms. While that might seem helpful in the moment, it becomes a major hassle when no one can find the packing tape or the scissors.

Avoid that stress by keeping packing materials together and taking empty boxes and cushioning material to the room you’re packing up. You can then bring the filled box back to your central packing station to seal it up. The job gets done, and everyone knows where the tape is when they need it.

Postpone Sentimentality

Going through your belongings as you pack can bring up lots of feelings. There’s nothing wrong with this, but going on trips down memory lane is not usually an effective use of time when working on a deadline.

Instead, focus on packing items safely and quickly. Remind yourself that you’ll have time to recollect when you unpack and arrange your belongings in your new space. You don’t need to discount the emotional side of the packing process, but it can be helpful to defer it.
