Packing Techniques
When it comes to safely packing your items, care is everything. Don’t rush through the process. Take your time with each and every piece to make sure it is packed up properly. Here are some easy ways to pack up the most common fragile items in your home.
- Plates and Glasses: Plates should be packed standing in smaller boxes. There should be crumpled paper at the bottom and top of the box to prevent movement, and each plate should be wrapped with bubble wrap and separated by more packing paper. Glasses should be wrapped individually and filled with packing paper. This helps to eliminate empty space and prevent cracks and breaks. Heavier glasses should go towards the bottom of the box.
- Pictures: If your frames are more than 8 inches tall or wide, they should be packed standing in smaller boxes. Frames should be wrapped in packing paper, with additional crumpled packing paper separating them. Larger pictures should be wrapped with plastic wrap and a blanket, and moved separately.
- Lamps: Lamps are somewhat tricky to move properly, but it’s not hard to get them ready. Shades should be packed separately, with the flat side at the bottom. Boxes should be filled with paper to minimize movement. Lamp bases should be bubble-wrapped and placed in boxes that fit their size.
- Figurines and Smaller Breakables: Make sure that each figurine or smaller piece is wrapped separately in bubble wrap. Mind all handles and edges that are more prone to breaking. Fill the box with packing paper or other filler to make sure they don’t move around too much.
- Larger Breakables: For larger breakables, there’s no such thing as wrapping them “too much.” Use everything you’ve got: Put flexible cardboard, plastic wrap, packing paper, and bubble wrap all over the object, making sure to reinforce handles and other fragile, protruding surfaces. Use a box that is roughly the same size as the object, and fill all the empty space with paper to keep movement down. You can also use cardboard on the sides of the object for further stabilization.
