Retiring in 2022? Move to One of These Cities

January 25, 2022 by

Are you planning to retire this year?

Retirement is a major milestone that often gets marked with a big relocation. After all, now that you’re no longer tied to your career, you can go wherever you want!

Because relocating after retirement is such a common practice, every year U.S. News & World Report and Money.com both publish their rankings for the best American cities to retire in. If you’re looking to relocate after retirement, you’ll get some invaluable insights from these lists to jumpstart your adventure.

To save you some time, though, we decided to highlight some of the takeaways that we found most interesting. Take a look below!

Which Qualities Are Most Important for Retirement?

First off, what makes one city better for retirement than another?

While the two publications had different methodologies, they emphasized many of the same qualities, such as:

  • Home affordability
  • Retiree tax rates
  • Weather
  • Healthcare access
  • Local amenities
  • Outdoor resources

Which States Are Most Popular for Retirees?

Florida is evidently a haven for retirees. According to Money.com and U.S. News & World Report, the Sunshine State boasts a whopping thirteen cities that are ideal for retirement:

  • Boca Raton
  • Ocala
  • Tampa
  • Orlando
  • Lakeland
  • Pensacola
  • Port St. Lucie
  • Fort Myers
  • Tampa
  • Melbourne
  • Daytona Beach
  • Naples
  • Sarasota

And we’ll admit, the runner-up for having the most retirement-friendly cities surprises us a little. It’s Pennsylvania, with eight cities named between the two lists:

  • Lancaster
  • Harrisburg
  • Allentown
  • Lower Merion Township
  • Reading
  • York
  • Philadelphia
  • Scranton

Honorable mentions go to Tennessee and North Carolina, both of which have three cities that ranked. Tennessee has Knoxille, Nashville, and Franklin, while North Carolina has Raleigh, Durham, and Asheville.
