Top 5 U.S. Cities to Move to in 2023

May 1, 2023 by

Whether you’re thinking about moving or simply curious about the best places to live, looking at the top-ranked cities according to U.S. News and World Report is fascinating. Some of them will be familiar, but some may surprise you!

What Goes Into a City’s Ranking?

Before getting to the 2023 list of top-ranking U.S. cities to move to, let’s look at how those rankings are determined. What actually goes into deciding those top five spots?

While there are subtle factors and personal preferences that contribute to an individual’s feelings about a particular location, there are also measurable criteria that determine the ranking of a certain city. These include:

  • Cost of living
  • Median income
  • College readiness of high school graduates
  • Job market

There are also deciding elements that are evaluated based on survey responses rather than numerical data. These include:

  • Quality of life
  • Wellbeing of residents
  • Overall desirability

Taken together, these are the main factors that decide which U.S. cities occupy the top spots—and the order of those rankings. While the rankings often change year-to-year, it’s a solid bet that these locations will offer a positive living experience for anyone who chooses to move there.

Which U.S. Cities Rank in the Top Five?

Starting at the bottom of the list, the number five-ranked city to move to is San Jose, California. San Jose is known for its high-income job market and stellar education system—it’s at the top of the list in terms of college readiness. Along with the high paychecks, however, there’s also a high cost of living.

In the number four spot is Boulder, Colorado. Similar to San Jose in many respects, Boulder is ranked second in college readiness, has a strong job market, but also has a high cost of living. Boulder also offers exceptional access to nature via the nearby Rocky Mountains and has a high ranking for quality of life.

Coming in at number three is Green Bay, Wisconsin. In addition to being the hometown of the Green Bay Packers, this midwestern metropolis has a relatively low cost of living compared to the median household income.

At number two is another southwest gem: Colorado Springs, Colorado. While it isn’t the most affordable of cities, Colorado Springs ranks high in overall desirability and has a strong job market.

The city in the number one spot may not be as well known as some of the others, but it outshines them in the 2023 rankings nonetheless: Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville offers that elusive balance of a strong job market and a low cost of living. With a growing science and technology sector, this U.S. city is sure to be a top contender for years to come.
