Top Tips for Moving in the Fall

November 12, 2022 by

If you’re considering a fall move, there are a few quirks to keep in mind as you plan and execute your relocation. Here are our top three tips for moving during the fall season.

Shop Around for a Moving Company

Statistically, summer is one of the most popular moving times. This means that in the fall, it’s possible that moving companies may have fewer bookings—and therefore might offer a lower rate on moving services.

With this in mind, it’s worth your while to shop around and compare quotes from a number of different companies in your area. You may be surprised at the price differences—and the savings—that you find!

Keep Seasonal Items Close at Hand

When you pack up your belongings during a fall move, make sure you keep season-appropriate items close at hand. You don’t want your family’s jackets, scarves, and umbrellas buried at the bottom of a box when you’re trying to stay warm and dry in fall weather.

It can even be helpful to pack a few of these items in bags that you’ll keep with you, versus in boxes that get taken by your moving company. That way, you’ll know exactly where things are when you need them.

Work With Your Movers to Plan for Fall Weather

While fall may bring lower moving costs, it can also bring rain, wind, mud, and leaves. Fall scenery can be pleasant when viewed from afar, but can be a hassle when you have to move in it!

You can avoid some of this hassle by planning ahead. Check with your moving company to find out how they handle inclement weather. This will help you have peace of mind in terms of knowing how your belongings will be handled and protected from the elements.

It can also be helpful to put down plastic or tarps inside your old and new home during the moving process. This will help keep things clean even if you and your movers end up tracking in water, mud, or leaves.
